F is for the FORCE awakens!
With the new Star Wars movie coming out, you’re probably inundated with Star Wars imagery at every turn. But what does it take to reimagine something so well-loved and iconic? Pierre’s wide-ranging style landed him the coveted Disney gig to illustrate some of pop culture’s seminal characters for Trident Gum’s limited edition launch for The Force Awakens: R2D2, C-3PO, Yoda, and of course, Darth Vader. It was so well received that it was part of the executive walk-through for the launch of Star Wars. We asked Pierre a few questions and this is what he had to say:
Q: What was the process like to recreate such recognizable characters for Trident and Disney?
PB: Consistency is key when working on a series of images that will be presented side by side and I had the crucial task to establish a style suitable for both metallic/reflective characters (like Darth Vader and C-3PO) and organic ones (like Yoda). The tight deadline meant we had to deliver the imagery at light speed! With the help of CGI, combined with traditional illustration, we crafted a unique lighting style and distinct graphic lines while making sure the characters were faithfully represented.
Q: What was Star Wars’s influence on you as a CG artist?
I remember playing the Star Wars SNES game from the early ‘90s and being immersed into its creative universe. I was always fascinated by the inventiveness of all aspects of the cultural icon, from special effects to concept art, character design to sound FX. Studying behind the scenes footage and books was amongst the triggers that made me realize I wanted to be a visual artist.
